can pregnancy cause hair loss?
« on: July 23, 2010, 02:23:04 PM »
My daughter just had a baby and I've noticed a lot of hairloss.  I don't want to say anything to her about it before she says something to me, but is there something for women that i can suggest to help her regrow her hair?

During pregnancy, changes in the skin, hair and nails are common. The correct diagnosis and treatment of these conditions during pregnancy are essential to ensure the health of both mother and baby.Hirsutism, a condition in which a woman grows hair in areas where only a man would, such as the face or chest, can be triggered by the endocrine changes of pregnancy. This condition usually regresses within six months following birth.

Yes.   Pregnancy can definitely cause hair loss.  Hopefully, after a period of time the hair should come back.  If your daughter is not happy with her hair after 6 months she can try Rogaine 2%.  She should read the warnings on the box and be aware of potential side affects.  She could also consider a laser comb or both the comb and Rogaine.

Good luck.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.
